KEVIN BOURICIUS

Kevin was born in Katonah, New York and only moved to Massachusetts later in his life to be nearer to his parents who had moved to Amherst several years earlier.  Growing up in a Unitarian household, he has a keen sense of community, an attitude of fairness and a giving nature that goes well beyond his means to give sometimes. He was musical as a youth and drew frequently, but he became serious as a painter while in the midst of a hospital stay.  He furiously worked at becoming van Gogh.  Successfully weathering the obsession with the iconic painter, Kevin grew on to paint very original compositions, one after another.  Pretty much an autodidact, he studied some at SUNY in Purchase, NY, but he did not complete the degree.

Vincent van Gogh, in a letter to his brother Theo, wrote, "There may be a great fire in our soul, but no one comes to warm himself by it, and the passers-by see only a wisp of smoke." Kevin could write these same words about the lonliness of his venture into the passionate interiors that are the subject of his work.  His paintings and their curious subjects clearly show him performing the hardest vocation there is, artistry, for what role does a painter play but to paint what he paints because it needs to be painted regardless of the applause he receives or lack of it.

Kevin has been steadily at work for thirty studio years, exploring the limits of oil paint to delimit the scope of his inner vision. Still his images are recognizable to us and tantalizingly available to our interpretation of them: however, in most cases, we would be wrong in any literal reading that he has firmly in mind: "This is a memory of Marie.." or "This is a mixture of a vision and a dream I had last night..." or "This figure comes from Goya, and this from Bruegel...", and so where we connect to his work, he has found some key to universal humanity and has unlocked our hearts.
