Born in Texas in 1963, Jonathan Stark studied art and ceramics at Bennington College in Vermont and Evergreen College in Washington State. He moved to Massachusetts in 1993 to join his family who had resettled here not much before his arrival. From his very private Amherst studio, Stark has conducted a nonstop experiment with line and repetitive gesture to create very active pictorial fields, crawling with afterimage electricity and visual tension. AHOA has represented his work since its founding in 1997. He has since shown and sold in New York City, Boston, and Washington, D.C. Most recently, his work is on exhibit in Austin, Texas.
Jon can be very articulate when he speaks about his work and here he says "The reason, or why behind my work is simple: drawing is how I contribute to society in a constructive and meaningful way. The decisions I make when I draw are about where to let an "inclusion" (a blank space) happen, what extent the drawing is to be planned out (usually geometrically balanced) before filling in with the line, and how to make the balance of color pleasing to the eye. My drawings are meant to be appreciated from a moderate distance for their "overall" effect, as well as close up for their detail. Some digital images of my work appear less vivid than the original drawings due to color and pixel considerations and variations during the digital photographic process.
